What is Gold Filled Jewellery?
Gold filled jewellery is created by bonding a thick layer of real gold to a base metal, usually brass. Unlike gold plating, which uses a very thin gold layer that wears off quickly, gold filled pieces have a much thicker gold layer - typically at least 5% of the item's total weight. This makes them durable, long lasting, and resistant to tarnishing, giving you the beautiful look and feel of solid gold without the hefty price tag.
All our pieces at Golden Hour are 18k gold filled, offering a fine finish and a touch of everyday luxury. Each item is handcrafted in Brazil and meticulously made to meet the 1/20 5% gold filled standard, ensuring both authenticity and long-lasting wear. Plus, all our pieces are hypoallergenic so you can wear them with confidence.
Why choose gold filled jewellery?
Durability: The thick gold layer means your jewellery resists tarnishing and lasts for years with proper care.
Affordability: Enjoy the look and feel of solid gold without the high cost.
Hypoallergenic: Less likely to cause skin irritation compared to plated pieces.
Value: A perfect middle ground between solid gold and gold plated jewellery, offering quality and longevity you can trust.
How does gold filled compare to other types of gold jewellery?
Gold plated jewellery
Gold plating applies a very thin layer of gold over a base metal. While affordable, this layer can wear away in weeks or months, especially with everyday use - exposing the base metal underneath. Gold plated pieces are more prone to tarnishing and losing their shine.
Gold vermeil jewellery
Gold vermeil uses a thicker layer of gold (typically 10K or higher) plated over sterling silver. It’s more durable than standard plating but still has a thinner gold layer compared to gold filled jewellery. Vermeil offers a nice balance of quality and price but may wear over time with frequent wear.
